Revision of the Carboniferous medullosalean prepollen organs from the Upper Silesian Basin (Czech Republic)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Seven species of medullosalean prepollen organs were distinguished following a revision of the collections in the Ostrava Museum: Givesia media (Stockmans) Stockmans et Willière, Kotasotheca annaadamii Pacyna et Zdebska, Whittleseya cf. brevifolia White, W. concinna Matthew, W. dawsoniana White, W. delphinae Stockmans et Willière and W. desiderata White. All the specimens came from the Carboniferous (Yeadonian and Langsettian) Karviná Formation, Saddle, Suchá and Doubrava members. Prepollen grains are elliptical in outline, and have a single suture on the proximal surface, ornamented distally by two longitudinal grooves. These prepollen grains are assigned to Monoletes ovatus Schopf and were isolated from specimens of Whittleseya concinna, W. delphinae and W. desiderata. Different species have different prepollen size: Whittleseya concinna - 155-208 m, W. delphinae - 198-228 m, and Whittleseya desiderata- 195-288 m long. Large prepollen grain size variability was probably because the four studied prepollen organs were of different stages of maturity. No attached fructifications were found, but based on evidence of association Whittleseya concinna probably belonged to Neuralethopteris larischii foliage, and Whittleseya desiderata to Neuropteris obliqua foliage. The other studied fructifications were not accompanied by pteridosperm foliage. Whittleseya delphinae and W. elegans have been considered as synonyms by some authors (Pacyna et Zdebska, 2010) but this problem may be resolvable by cuticular study.
