Agriculture of the Czech Republic (CR) has some restrictive factors (i.e., approximately 60% of agricultural land belongs to the LFA categories), which significantly limit conventional agricultural production. On the other hand, the common composition ofagricultural areas is very suitable for alternative biomass production, because the total area of unused unfertilised soils is equal to one-fifth of the total agricultural area. Biomass is a very important renewable source of feedstock and energy. The wastes or by-products originated in conventional agriculture and forestry production coupled with special industrial crops and short rotation forestry are two main sources of biomass in CR. Agricultural biomass production is a very important part of sustainable development and it solves a number of economic, social and environmental problems. At present, the total annual consumption of energy biomass is about 1.8-2 million tonnes, which is equal 1,8-2% of total energy consumption in CR.
