Sulfur nutrition of plants and their resistance to aphids
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The effects of sulfur (S) fertilization in combination with nitrogen (N) on plant growth and resistance to aphids were studied in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) infested with Aphis fabae and summer barley (Hordeum sativum) infested with Rhopalosiphum padi. Plants were grown in constant conditions on a heavy soil from sugar beet growing region, well supplied with nutrients, with water soluble S content 20 mg.kg-1 dry soil. Sulfur and N in the form of ammonium nitrate and sodium sulfate were applied in different combinations into the soil before sowing. In sugar beet and barley both nutrients stimulated plant growth, but their effects were significantly enhanced when applied simultaneously. Sugar beet responded to S much better than barley. In both crops, the variants where only N was applied had the highest number of aphids. Addition of S to N in most cases decreased plant infestation. The best effect on crops resistance to aphids had combinations of S with lower doses of N. The nutrients t
