Effect of nutrition of plants on their resistance to aphids
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Aphids need in their food high content of low molecular nitrogenous compounds, therefore improved nitrogen nutrition and namely over-fertilization of plants with nitrogen increase significantly their infestation with aphids. We examined the effect of sulfur (S) supply to nitrogen (N) on plant growth and reproduction of aphids, Aphis fabae on sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) and Rhopalosiphum padi on barley (Hordeum sativum). Plants were grown in constant cultivation conditions. Nitrogen in the form of ammonium nitrate and S in the form of sodium or ammonium sulfate were applied in different combinations into the soil before sowing. Both nutrients applied separately stimulated plant growth, but their effects were highly increased when applied simultaneously.Infestation with aphids correlated partly with intensity of plant growth and was higher on all fertilized plants. However on both crops it was the highest on variants where only nitrogen was supplied. Surprisingly the enhancement of singl
