Organic matter supply is essential for the maintenance of optimum soil organic matter level in most farming systems. We could show a statistically significant correlation between the estimated organic matter balance and the total organic C content in topsoil. Average dry matter yields of the cultivated crops differed remarkably in individual sites and variants. The effect of organic and mineral fertilisation on the C and N dynamics in soil could be distinctly quantified. The efficiency of organic fertilisation as compared to the efficiency of mineral nutrition related to the dry matter yields differed in individual sites. The relationships between estimated organic matter balances and the dry matter yields, however, were not statistically significant.
