Work on plant genetic resources (PGR) has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. Since 1993 all activities on PGR have been carried out within the National programe (NP) on PGR. The NP is based on domestic traditions, national legislation ( Act. No. 148/2003 Coll.) and FAO recommendations (Global Plan of Action). It also respects the international agreements. The NP outlines the basic conditions and requirements that are followed by the genebanks, i.e. the mutual cooperation in the areas of collecting,documentation, characterization, long-term conservation and sustainable utilization of genetic resources.
