Improving soil testing system in the Czech Republic

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Some of the selected basic parameters (i.e. soil pH and contents of available essential nutrients) of soil fertility are observed in the Czech Republic in a system of long-term agrochemical soil testing since the 1960s. The extraction procedure Mehlich 3 is the official analytical method currently used in this soil testing system for the determination of available P, K, Mg and Ca. The advantage of the simple and easy Mehlich 3 analytical procedures are their uniformity and suitability for determination of several other elements (see below) that were not currently routinely tested. In the interests of a system of harmonized plant nutrition and fertilization, the testing system is being improved and developed under four main aims: - extension of the applicability of the method Mehlich 3 for sulphur and micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, B); - adaptation of a more accurate correction for phosphorus determination in carbonate soils, thus enabling the better utilization of fertilizers in given regions and decreasing the risks of phosphorus leaching to underground waters and causing eutrophication of surface waters and the related environment; - achievement of greater precision and extension of the determination of nutrient concentrations with minimum other expenses (using the analytical method ICP-OES) for users (land owners, agricultural farms and laboratories); - determination of new assessment criteria of the nutrient supply of soils leading to a more accurate specification of fertilization doses and the direct utilization of results in agriculture primary production as well as strategic planning. All results from the determination of the above-mentioned soil properties can be used for determining the most suitable application rates of nutrients for best nutrient management – i.e. rates for high yields and production quality while at the same time being friendly to the environment. All results from this testing system are stored in the Land Parcel Information System (LPIS) – (a system based on the actual use of land in a geographic information database) and the results are disseminated free of charge for users (farmers, state administrative bodies).
