The 1st meeting of the Cryopreservation Working Group of ECPGR
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The first meeting of the newly established working group for the cryopreservation of plant genetic resources as part of the program of European cooperation focused on the conservation of plant genetic resources (ECPGR - The European Cooperative) was held at the Research Institute of Plant Production, v. v. i. in Prague Ruzyna on 3 - 4 May 2023 Program for Plant Genetic Resources). The meeting was attended by a total of 20 working group members from 13 European countries, one observer each from Egypt and Ukraine, one recognized expert from the USA, a representative of the National Program for Conservation and Use of Plant Genetic Resources and Agrobiodiversity from the Czech Republic and a representative of the ECPGR office in Italy. The aim of this working group is to support the development and use of methods of cryopreservation of plant genetic resources as a safety backup for collections of vegetatively propagated plants that are normally kept in field conditions and are thus threatened by extreme weather fluctuations or damage by diseases or pests. Cryopreservation of plant genetic resources in Europe has so far been uncoordinated at individual national workplaces and there was no common strategy. Therefore, a working group of experts who have been dealing with this issue for a long time was created, the goal of which is to create strategic documents for setting priorities for the conservation of genetic resources of plants in Europe and the organization of professional training for higher use and efficiency of cryopreservation methods. The first such training will take place already this year at VÚRV, v. v. i. Prague - Ruzyna and will focus on methods of cryopreservation of genetic resources of garlic, while long-term experience with cryopreservation of garlic genotypes in the Czech Republic will be used.
