The first references to the need for forest conservation at a nationwide scale can be found in the code of law ?Maiestas Karolina? (1355). The first nature conservation act that includes forests into the protected areas network was not published until 1956. The present valid Nature Conservation Act (2004) differentiates 6 categories of specially protected Areas. ?Protecte Forest? can be in all of them. The Forest Act (1955) knows 3 forest categories: production forests, special-purpose forest and protective forests. Forest covers more than 2.6 mil. ha (33 % of total area); 61 % of forests are state property. Within all the specially protected areas are 680,000 ha of forest (26 % of all forests). Forest-management plans must be approved for every forestproperte larger than 50 ha; moreover for every specially protected area, a nature conservation management plan must be approved as well.
