Complex aspects of development of bioenergy with regard to the impacts of climate change in conditions of the Czech Republic

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This study models the impacts of climate change on the potential for biomass from agricultural residues, energy crops, and forest residues to be used for energy in the Czech Republic. The bark beetle calamity, driven by increased temperatures and drought, has significantly impacted the potential of woody biomass from forests, while the agricultural sector faces yield variability. The paper quantifies expected changes in biomass availability up to 2050 and explores options for replacing declining forest resources. Results show the most pronounced impacts on forest biomass, with a projected 22 % decrease in available residues by 2030 and a further 14 % decrease by 2050. In contrast, agricultural and energy crops demonstrate good adaptability to climate change. The decline in forest biomass could be offset by increasing the cultivation of perennial energy crops on less fertile soils and in areas with ecosystem service deficits. Domestic biomass sources could meet biofuel policy goals, but a balance must be found between competing land-use, economic, and logistical priorities. The study concludes that biomass potential is not a deterministic, static value; it is highly variable over time, influenced by several factors, including legislative policies, agricultural technologies, and market demands, which must be considered in future energy planning.
