Characterisation of a ST100 Staphylococcus epidermidis producing an LnuB nucleotidyltransferase: Evidence for interspecies spread of an lnuB-carrying transposon
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The increasing emergence of staphylococci resistant to lincosamides is a growing public health concern worldwide. Here, the structure of the first lsaE/lnuB-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis strain isolated in Greece is described. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) classified the isolate as ST100. Sequence analysis showed that the strain harboured a 12.1-kb segment carrying lnuB and lsaE, flanked by insertion sequence IS257 in parallel orientation. Downstream of the left-hand IS257, four ORFs encoding a hypothetical protein, a putative methyltransferase, an amino-glycoside 6-adenylyltransferase (aadE) and an adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (apt) were found. The apt gene was followed by the spc gene conferring resistance to spectinomycin. A sequence comprising lsaE and lnuB and two ORFs encoding hypothetical proteins of unknown function was adjacent to the right-hand IS257. The lnuB-carrying segment shared extensive similarity (100% coverage, 99% identity) with the IS257-based composite transposon that was identified previously in ST9 methicillin-susceptible and ST398 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus of human origin. To our knowledge, this is the first description of an lnuB-positive ST100 S. epidermidis worldwide.
