Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are important etiological agents causing a wide range of diseases in humans but also in poultry. In humans, they are the most common cause of community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs). In poultry, they cause serious avian disease associated with variety of clinical signs from localized infections to systemic septicaemia. A comparative analysis showed that avian and human isolates contain similar set of genes encoding virulence factors.
