Microplastics contained in personal care products may adversely affect aquatic organisms

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In recent decades, the discovery that plastic microparticles are the ubiquitous pollutant of aquatic environment resulted in their intensive research in the field of aquatic toxicology. Microplastics had been commonly used in personal care products (PCPs) mainly for their abrasive function. Plastic microparticles in PCPs are included as additives or can be sorbed into the plastic materials while in both cases may act as vectors of many other toxic pollutants. The PCPs manufacturers tries to regulate these micro substances in their products due to microplastics were declared as an emerging pollutants. Nevertheless, microplastics can be still found in almost all water sources around the world, where they may pose risks to aquatic environment due to their resilience and propensity to be ingested by biota. The main task of this study was to evaluate the polystyrene foodborne microplastic’s effects on selected haematological and biochemical parameters of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) juveniles. Fish were divided into 4 groups – control group without the addition of microplastics in their diet and groups exposed to three different microparticles concentrations for 6 weeks. The results showed a statistically significant decrease in the number of leukocytes, especially the lymphocytes, after oral intake of polystyrene microparticles. Regards the biochemical parameters, the ammonia, total protein and ceruloplasmin all decreased significantly in plasma samples of polystyrene exposed groups. The resulting data will be completed with the gene expression analysis of selected inflammatory and non-inflammatory cytokines.
