Effects of four personal care products – Triclosan, Triclocarban, Methylparaben and Propylparaben on embryonic stages of Cyprinus carpio

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Personal care products (PCPs) are used daily by people around the world. Their entry into the environment raises concerns about the potential threat to non-target organisms. Recently, there has been a growing interest in studying the properties of these pollutants. This is mainly due to their properties, which include, for example, the ability to bioaccumulate, and also due to potential adverse effects on human health such as substances with mutagenic, carcinogenic and estrogenic activity. Since these substances are constantly entering the aquatic environment, more attention must be paid to reveal their ecotoxicological potential. Moreover, it is known that fish are the most sensitive to aquatic contaminants between the period of hatching and onset eating exogenous food. Therefore, it is necessary to know their toxicological properties on the early-life stages and their potential to affect health and welfare of aquatic organisms, The aim of this study was to determine the effect of four PCPs (triclosan, triclocarban, methylparaben and propylparaben) on embryonic stages of Cyprinus carpio, an important Each of the PCPs was tested in five concentrations for 96 hours. Evaluated endpoints were monitored and recorded every 24 hours. The results do not indicate any significant changes at environmentally relevant concentrations of the tested personal care products. However, it is necessary to point out that there results are coming from a quick screening experiment inspired by the OECD method No. 236. If more sensitive endpoints were added to the study, there is a chance that some changes would be observed also in lower, more environmentally-relevant concentrations.
