The dynamics of food prices in the EU regions during the episodic crises - a look at Central and Western Europe

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the price dynamics within the food value chain in selected EU countries are consistent with the concept of integration at EU level or whether there are asymmetries in prices within the EU. To answer this question, we analysed the differences in consumer food prices dynamics between two different regions-the old member states (Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands) and the new member states (Czechia, Poland, Slovakia) and Germany. These differences may be even more pronounced in the period of market shocks. The study analyses the entire period from 2015 to 2024 as well as the shorter periods. The results show that within the EU countries under the scope the new member states were exposed to greater increases in consumer food prices than the old member states along all the period examined. The crises have led to an acceleration of price growth in all countries examined with developments being more pronounced and coherent within the new member states. Crises exacerbated price differences across the EU, with more coherent patterns observed within individual sub-regions, particularly in the new member states. The results support the notion of regional rather than EU-wide convergence in food price behaviour.
