The relationship between Leoš Janáček and Lidové noviny was a friendly and long-lasting one. Their collaboration began with the very first edition in 1893, and his last contribution was printed by Lidové noviny just a few months before he died. Of all the newspapers and magazines which were available in the news stands during Janáček?s lifetime, Lidové noviny was his favourite. Not only did it bring him political news, but the literature and poetry sections expanded his horizons as a reader and at the same time inspired him to write some of his compositions. It was in this newspaper that Janáček published his famous feuilletons, interspersed with numerous speech melodies. The composer kept in close touch with Lidové noviny through personal connectionswith its founder, Adolf Stránský, as well as many of its editors, some of whom would later become his friends. Although Janáček was not a frequent visitor to the Lidové noviny offices, his presence there always caused a stir as the staff
