Churches and Palaces of the Great Moravian Veligrad – Architecture of the Staré Město–Uherské Hradiště Agglomeration
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Staré Město and Uherské Hradiště belong to very important sites of early medieval architecture on the territory of the Czech Republic. In the Great Moravian period (9th century), one of the most important power centres called Veligrad was situated on the middle course of the Morava River. In the early phase of Christianisation of Central European Slavs, at least three stone churches and one large architectural-urbanistic complex were erected there including five ecclesiastical buildings of various functions. At least one stone church existed then in the next neighbourhood of Veligrad – Staré Město and Uherské Hradiště, in Modrá u Velehradu at the distance of 4 km. Among finds of Veligrad architecture, palace-type buildings of profane character were discovered having served as residence of social elites, i.e. ruling princes and eminent ecclesiastic dignitaries. The existence of further buildings with mainly sacral functions, i.e. churches, is highly probable in Staré Město and Uherské Hradiště and will be the object of further research.
