In the collection of the Department of the History of Biological Sciences of the Moravian Museum, there is a photo album in green boards, entitled OLD BRNO MONASTERY – MENDEL MEMORABILIA. However, this album currently contains only one photograph, as evidenced by the entry on the three-part card. When the monastery photo album was created, who removed the majority of the photographs from it, when and why, and whether they can be safely found today are questions that will come to mind to anyone who takes this relic of the old monastery museum in their hands. The monastery album was created between 1922–1942 and was used for presentation purposes of the small monastery museum. With absolute certainty, we can include in it 4 surviving photographs out of a total of 14 images. The remainder can be determined with more or less certainty. A positive is that the interiors of the monastery did not undergo any major changes until 1945, so the selected images should not differ substantially from the unpreserved originals in terms of their content. The biggest question concerns images 3 and 9, where there are many possible angles from which the building and monument could have been taken and there are more images in the surviving archive of photographs and negatives that could have been included in the album. This attempt to reconstruct the contents of the photo album is based on the ongoing digitisation of the image material of the Department of the History of Biological Sciences and the preparation of publications for the 200th anniversary of Gregor Johann Mendel’s birth.
