The Algae Collection in Gregor Mendel’s Herbarium. The Collections of the Austrian Algologist and Franciscan Priest Pius Titius Vendel (1801–1884) in the Herbarium of the Augustinian Monastry in Staré Brno.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The collection of herbarium items, originating from Staré Brno monastery and associated with the name of Gregor Mendel, is a collection of several smaller items with different forms and quality of workmanship. The oldest part, framed images with descriptions of species, is attributed to the important Moravian botanist, Augustin Thaler, an Augustinian from Staré Brno monastery. These visually very nice pieces were intended for the exhibition purposes of Staré Brno monastery, as evidenced by the marks on these objects. Other items of the herbarium no longer served these purposes and lacked the other features of a professionally maintained herbarium. The other two collections consist of some souvenirs from travels and some contemporary souvenirs that were given to museum visitors by the Augustinians as a memento. This part of the herbarium differs significantly in appearance from the oldest part of the herbarium. It is also the most modern part of the herbarium and was created in the 1930s. The individual items of the so-called Mendel herbarium were identified and described by the Brno botanist Anežka Hrabetová-Uhrová in 1972, with the exception of algae collections undertaken on the Adriatic coast by the Austrian algologist and Franciscan priest Father Pius Titius Vendel. However, these are only a fragment of the typical herbarium items that he supplied to educational institutions in the 1850s and 1860s. This contemporary of G. Mendel was certainly an interesting scientific personality of his time. He was a respected collector and educator as well as a creator of educational aids. He was a member of the Zoological-Botanical Society in Vienna (Die Kaiserlich-Königliche Zoologisch-Botanische Gesellschaft in Wien), and it was through this society that his collections were sent to various parts of the monarchy on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Education. The relatively narrow focus of his collections on algae and the frequent presence of his herbarium at educational and scientific institutions earned him a place among the scientific community of the time.
