Zum Status analoger Fotografie in der digitalen Bildkultur

Die analogen Verfahren sind im Verlauf der letzten 30 Jahre aus der fotografischen Praxis weitgehend verschwunden. In historischen Archiven und musealen Sammlungen umfassen die Bestände aber weiterhin hauptsächlich fotochemisch entwickelte Bilder auf Papier. Der Stellenwert dieser Objekte hat sich durch den Wandel von der analogen zur digitalen Bildkultur allerdings von Grund auf verändert. Sie sind zu Zeugnissen einer historischen Medienpraxis geworden. In Bilddatenbanken werden sie durch digitale Stellvertreter ersetzt. Außerdem haben sich die Ordnungsprinzipien der Sammlungen im Zuge der Digitalisierung verändert. Mit diesen beiden Entwicklungen setze ich mich in meinem Beitrag auseinander, und zwar unter besonderer Berücksichtigung künstlerischer Gebrauchsweisen der Fotografie.

Over the last thirty years, analogue processes in photography have almost disappeared. The archives and museum collections still largely include images on paper which were produced in the classic, photochemical way – i.e. analogue photographs – but their significance has fundamentally changed on account of the shift from the analogue to the digital image. They have become a record of historical photographic practice. In contemporary image databases, analogue images have become wholly replaced by their digital representations, or rather reproductions. Digitization has also transformed the cataloguing principles of photography collections. My essay focuses on these two tendencies particularly in the context of art photography.
