Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz-Rietberg and His Grand Tour: Inspiration for His Future Musical Patronage?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz-Rietberg became one of the most influential persons in Austrian foreign policy during the 18th century. He was also known for his role in Viennese cultural life, acting as protector of several artists. Before beginning his career at the imperial court, the young Kaunitz completed his education with a grand tour (1731-1734) documented by several sources: correspondence, lists of accounts, Kaunitz’s fictive diary and a list of persons who he met during his journey. The last source contains nearly 900 persons, more than one hundred of these are musicians, mainly opera singers, but also composers, cello virtuosi and a few other instrumentalists. The present case study documents the beginnings of Kaunitz’s artistic network that later influenced the careers of many musicians.
