Im September 1874 trafen in der Vatikanischen Bibliothek 60 Kisten mit Büchern von Anton Ruland, eines Priesters, Abgeordneten des bayerischen Parlaments und Leiter der Universitätsbibliothek Würzburg ein. Ruland war nicht nur ein Sammler von Handschriften, sondern hauptsächlich von gedruckten Werken und seine Sammlung umfasste über 10 000 Bände. Den Transport hatte die Nuntiatur in München organisiert, die Kosten musste folglich der Heilige Stuhl tragen. Ruland besaß nur sehr wenige mittelalterliche Handschriften, bei denen es sich zumeist um Chroniken von Klöstern und Städten handelte, teilweise waren es auch Bibliothekskataloge und Lebensläufe aus bayerischen Schulen, folglich eine Angelegenheit der Lokalgeschichte. Die meisten seiner Bücher hatte Ruland mit wunderschönen Exlibris versehen. Eine Reihe von Bänden hat einen präzisen Einband (den charakteristischen deutschen Ledereinband aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, einige Bücher waren auch in das Pergament einer älteren Handschrift gebunden). Rulands Sammlung umfasst 58 Erstdrucke. 37 Exemplare dieser Erstdrucke befanden sich nicht in der Vatikanischen Bibliothek – beispielsweise ein französisches Lexikon aus dem Jahr 1494 oder eine lateinische Ausführung von Homers Werken. Als Priester besaß Ruland eine Menge theologischer und liturgischer Bücher – insbesondere alte Ausgaben aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, aber auch eine Bibelversion und Bücher der Kirchenväter, z.B. des hl. Hieronymus mit Anmerkungen von Erasmus. Hier finden sich auch Ausdrucke von Zivil- und Kirchengesetzbüchern sowie eine ganze Reihe von Wörterbüchern und Glossaren – beispielsweise die erste moderne Enzyklopädie der Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Ruland hatte in seiner Sammlung auch eine Vielzahl philosophischer Bücher, aber auch Werke protestantischer Autoren (z.B. Georg Samuel Mellin oder Immanuel Kant), ferner auch der bedeutendsten Philosophen Frankreichs und Englands; daneben hatte er sich auch eine Reihe historischer Arbeiten mit einer sogar den Orient einbeziehenden Thematik angeschafft. Von großer Bedeutung ist seine Textsammlung lateinischer und griechischer Klassiker, insbesondere deren Erstausgaben. Ruland hatte die Sammlung von seinem Vater, einem Arzt geerbt. Daher enthält sie auch viele medizinische Werke, sowohl aus der Antike als auch aus der Gegenwart.

In September 1874 arrived the library – about 10.000 volumes of manuscripts and printed books – of the Anton Ruland, who was librarian at the University of Würzburg, at the Vatican. In the testament of 16th February 1873 he decided to leave his rich collection to the Vatican Library. The administrator Friedrich Leitschuh packed the books in 66 boxes, which were transferred to Rome by train. The transport was organized by the nuncio in Munich. The catalogue of the collection, which had been asked by the Holy See, has never been handed over. The most of the 200 manuscripts had a local content, such as history and documents of monasteries and towns of Franconia, inventories of libraries, biographies of German scholars and philosophical and theological texts, especially collections of sermons. In the most of his printed books Ruland has put in his Ex-libris. Many of these volumes have a particular binding, such as typical German binding of the 15th and 16th century and some books are bound with leaves of medieval manuscripts. The collection was set up in the room near the reading room and some years later, transferred to the different section of the Vatican Library such as theology, philosophy, liturgy, classics, history etc. The German librarian possessed 58 incunables, of which 3 were in German such as the “Golden Legend” of Jacopo da Voragine. Many of the printed books are first editions. Ruland collected systematically rare bibles, editions of texts of the fathers of the church, liturgical, theological and philosophical publications. As librarian he was not only interested in encyclopedias, dictionaries, history, including oriental history, and classical text, but also in science. The most of the medical and books of science he had inherited from his father, who was a doctor and had a remarkable collection of specialist copies.
