Medieval and early modern imported ceramics in Northwest Slovakia
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
From the logic of its existence, imported ceramics disrupt the established patterns of local trade. This study deals with the findings of medieval and early modern age from northwestern Slovakia, specifically from the castles of Lietava and Strečno. These finds, although preserved only in a fragmentary state, refer to the high property and artistic status of the owners of castle pastures. The analysis showed that the imported ceramics can be basically divided into European earthenware and Mediterranean majolica with a significant Ottoman influence. Waldenburg stoneware, sandblasted ceramics of the Vienna Ring Road and Lostice semi-stoneware are documented from the German environment. The second group is mainly represented by a plate made of Venetian berrettino and a fraction of a higher vessel from Ottoman Iznik. Furthermore, fragments of various Balkan pottery imitating Ottoman pottery of more general origin are documented. It was also possible to identify several important personalities who could be the owners of these exclusivities - Mikuláš Kostka, František I. Turzo, Jiří VII. Turzo or František Vešeléni with his wife Žofia Bosniaková. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was the Hungarian social elite that participated in the development and management of the state and also in its defense against Ottoman expansion.
