Composition and corrosion forms on archaeological and non-archaeological historic printing letters from The Moravian museum, memorial of Kralice bible, The Czech republic and The Museum Plantin-Moretus Antwerp, Belgium

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Historical printing letters from two different locations are studied in their composition and corrosion. The Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp holds non-archaeological types in wooden cabinets from the 16th to the 19th Century. The collection of Kralice types were archaeological finds since the printing shop burnt down at the end of the 16th century. Both types consist of lead with primarily antimony and tin as alloying elements. Printing letters from Kralice are damaged from burial and subsequent atmospheric corrosion. The corrosion layers are formed mainly with lead oxides and carbonates. Analyses of the chemical composition show no tendencies in alloy element ratio versus the corrosion. The Antwerp types show in some cases very severe corrosion, due to the evaporation of organic gasses from the wood storage cabinets inducing the corrosion reaction. The corrosion rate is found to be very high in the antimony rich alloys. X-Ray Diffraction analyses on historic letters shows cerussite, hydrocerussite and in some cases acetate- or formate lead products. From both collections, metallographic analyses show that the matrix of Pb-Sb-Sn alloys is rich in lead and foremost altered with corrosion, whereas crystals of the hard Sn-Sb phase or Sb inclusions were left uncorroded. It is considered that a strong anodic-cathodic potential between the different phases are the source of the extreme corrosion rates within these alloys.
