Odborná monografie vznikla jako podklad pro zpracování technického scénáře k audiovizuálnímu dílu, jehož hlavním záměrem je objasnit roli technického dědictví z hlediska vývoje národní a kulturní identity či budování společnosti v průběhu 19. a 20. století a vysvětlit význam uchování kulturního dědictví ve formě technických sbírek a památek. Tento specifický segment kultury a historie, potažmo muzea zaměřená na techniku, si získávají zaslouženě stále větší pozornost ze strany národních či regionálních úřadů, ale i mezinárodních institucí a zvyšuje se jejich impakt ve společnosti. Technické dědictví je v knize komentováno jako hodnota, která je cenná pro současnou společnost i budoucí generace, a dnes je předmětem profesního zájmu různých typů muzeí a správců technických a industriálních památek (objektů a areálů). Objasněn je přístup k budování specifických muzejních sbírek ve specializovaných, ale i vlastivědných obecněji zaměřených muzeích v České republice, přičemž je postupně věnována pozornost všem procesům muzejní práce, jak je definuje teoretická muzeologie – od specifik muzejní selekce, přes problematiku tezaurace, včetně preventivní konzervace či restaurování, po muzejní prezentaci. V audiovizuálním dokumentu bude často jako ilustrativní příklad technického muzejnictví sloužit Technické muzeum v Brně, proto autorky logicky věnovaly pozornost konkrétním informacím a zkušenostem z historie této instituce, jakož i Metodického centra konzervace, jež je její nedílnou součástí a na ochranu technického dědictví se prioritně zaměřuje. Kromě retrospektivních pohledů jsou akcentovány i koncepční přístupy nebo vize Technického muzea v Brně, o které se formování této instituce, a obecněji rozvoj ochrany technického dědictví v ČR, opírá. Kniha je v tomto smyslu i muzeologickým pojednáním a významným příspěvkem do současného oborového diskurzu.

The expert monograph was created as a basis for the preparation of a technical script for an audiovisual work, the main purpose of which is to explain the role of technical heritage in terms of the development of national and cultural identity or the building of society during the 19th and 20th centuries and to explain the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the form of technical collections and monuments. This specific segment of culture and history, and consequently museums focusing on technology, are deservedly gaining more and more attention from national or regional authorities, as well as international institutions, and their impact on society is increasing. The technical heritage is commented in the book as a value that is valuable for the present society and future generations, and is now the subject of professional interest for various types of museums and managers of technical and industrial monuments (objects and sites). The approach to the building of specific museum collections in specialised, as well as general museums in the Czech Republic is explained, while attention is gradually paid to all the processes of museum work as defined by theoretical museology - from the specifics of museum selection, through the issues of thesauri, including preventive conservation or restoration, to museum presentation. In the audiovisual documentary, the Technical Museum in Brno will often serve as an illustrative example of technical museology, so the authors have logically paid attention to specific information and experiences from the history of this institution, as well as the Methodological Centre for Conservation, which is an integral part of it and focuses primarily on the protection of technical heritage. In addition to the retrospective views, the conceptual approaches or visions of the Technical Museum in Brno, which underpin the formation of this institution and, more generally, the development of technical heritage conservation in the Czech Republic, are also emphasised. In this sense, the book is also a museological treatise and an important contribution to the current discourse in the field.
