We now present characteristics and outcomes of a unique large cohort of European patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) receiving renal replacement therapy (RRT). We clearly show that the overall survival of patients with AAV is similar to that of patients with other nondiabetes diagnoses. Our results suggest that patients with AAV are suitable candidates for kidney transplantation with favorable transplant survival rates. Geographical differences in the incidence of RRT due to granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis copied the previously described distribution of both diseases. The high rate of recovery of independent kidney function in AAV highlights the importance of ongoing immunosuppressive treatment despite initial dialysis requirement.
