Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment: A Specialization in Lifestyle Medicine Centers
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Managing substance use disorders (SUDs) within the context of lifestyle medicine requires a multidisciplinary approach that addresses bio-psycho-socio-spiritual aspects of addiction. Early identification of patients at risk, combined with evidence-based brief interventions, motivational interviewing, and lifestyle modifications, can help prevent the progression of substance use disorders and improve overall patient outcomes. Lifestyle medicine centers are uniquely positioned to provide this integrated care, leveraging the pillars of lifestyle medicine—nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep hygiene, and community engagement—to support patients in their recovery journey. This chapter offers the reader a guide to the field of SUDs, starting with screening the risk level of substance use, through brief intervention and motivational interviewing, and ending with referring to specialized treatment for more complicated cases. It also presents up-to-date knowledge of the lifestyle medicine pillars connected with substance use. The chapter underscores the importance of closing practice gaps and ensuring that healthcare providers are equipped with the tools and resources necessary to effectively manage SUDs within their lifestyle medicine practice.
