El euskera es hoy en día una lengua plenamente integrada en la comunidad lingüística europea. Desde el punto de vista histórico, se trata de una lengua genealógicamente aislada, con posibles (y muy antiguas) relaciones con algunas lenguas caucásicas, conlas lenguas bereberes, y con menos seguridad, con el sustrato íbero. Por otra parte, se trata indudablemente de una lengua mezclada. Sus conexiones con la familia indoeuropea (lenguas celtas, lenguas romances) se notan claramente en el léxico, pero intuimos también una marcada influencia en sus categorías gramaticales. El presente artículo trata de llamar la atención sobre estos rasgos convergentes, cuya verificación puede contribuir a una delimitación más clara de sus rasgos preindoeuropeos.

The Basque language is a modern European language, fully integrated within the context of other European languages. From a historical point of view it is an isolated language with possible relations to the Caucasian languages, the Berber languages and perhaps also to the Iberian language. The linguistic influence of the Indo-European languages manifests itself principally in its Lexicon, but we can also observe a convergent approximation in its grammatical categories. This article intends to draw attention to the possible Indo-Europeanisation of Standard Basque (euskara batua) and postulates a distinction between its Pre-Romance traits and the Indo-Europeanised ones.
