"Anasthase" zwischen "Zauberberg" und "Doktor Faustus": Walter Seidls Beitrag zum literarischen Musikdiskurs als Chiffre für den Streit um die europäische Moderne.Musik als vermeintlich interkulturelle 'Sprache' wurde in der Literatur der ersten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts ja zugleich zum symbolischen Kampfplatz um Moderne, Reaktion und Dekadenz. Walter Seidls Zeitsatire "Anasthase und das Untier Richard Wagner" (Wien u.a. 1930) verwandelt den Franzosen Anasthase aus einem publizistischen Verfechter der internationalen Moderne in einen Kustos der Villa Wahnfried. Wie der "Zauberberg" endet Seidls kleiner Roman mit einer Vision des Ersten Weltkriegs, wie "Doktor Faustus" führt er die Auseinandersetzung zwischen "Zivilisationsliteratentum" und reaktionären Diskursen im Bild der Auseinandersetzung um die musikalische Moderne. Der Beitrag möchte Seidls Werk in dieser Hinsicht näher verorten. Unter anderem geht es dabei um die Fragen, ob die kulturelle Moderne nur westlich und fortschrittlich ist, welche Rolle Richard Wagner und die deutsch-französischen Kulturbeziehungen aus der Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs und der Zwischenkriegszeit als Symbole für die Ambivalenz der Moderne spielen, wie weit schließlich der in Thomas Manns "Doktor Faustus" als Bild der Einheit von Fortschritt und Reaktion, von kulturellem Aufstieg und Regression eingeführte "Weg um die Kugel" bereits in Walter Seidls kleinem Roman vorgezeichnet ist, nicht in Form eines figurenreichen diskursiven Epos, sondern verdichtet in einem gleichnishaften Lebenslauf zwischen den Kulturen.

"Anasthase" between "Magic Mountain" and "Doktor Faustus": Walter Seidl's contribution to literary speaking about music as a cipher for the debate about European modernism.Music as an apparently interculturally understandable 'language' obviously has become at the same time a symbolic battle area around modernity, political reaction, and decadence in literary texts from the first half of the twentieth century. Walter Seidl's satirical novel "Anasthase and the monster Richard Wagner" (Vienna etc. 1930), which mainly addressed the cultural life of its time, turns the Frenchman Anasthase from a public apologist of international modernism into a curator of Villa Wahnfried, i.e., Richard Wagner's home. Just like Thomas Mann's "Zauberberg" ("The Magic Mountain"), Seidl's small novel ends with a vision from the First World War; just like "Doktor Faustus" it shapes the debate about "Zivilisationsliteratentum" (as Thomas summed up his critique against his more liberal brother Heinrich in the "Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen", 1918), that is, progressiveness, and reactionary discourses in the image of the debate around modernism in music. The contribution asks in more detail for the intellectual position of Seidl's novel in this context. Among other things it deals with the questions whether cultural modernism may be called exclusively Western and progressive, what kinds of roles Richard Wagner and the cultural relations between France and Germany from the time of the First World-War and the interval between the wars may play as symbols of the ambivalence of modernism, in how far finally the image of the "path around the globe" which Thomas Mann introduces in his "Doktor Faustus" to grasp the coincidence of reaction and progress has already been prefigured in Walter Seidl's little novel - not by the means of a discursive epic with many characters, but more condensed in a typical biography between two cultures.
