Die menschliche Existenz kann in verschiedenen Hinsichten als endlich bezeichnet werden. Dieser Aufsatz befasst sich mit der Endlichkeit in dem Sinn des notwendig begrenzten Charakters unseres Erkennens. Diese Bedeutung der Endlichkeit wird gelegentlich mit dem Begriff der Perspektivität ausgedrückt: Unsere Erkenntnis ist an unseren Standpunkt gebunden, sei es wörtlich an unsere Stellung im Raum, oder an unsere sprachlich-kulturelle Identität. Der Verfasser unternimmt den Versuch, die einschlägigen philosophischen Analysen, wie wir sie vor allem in der Phänomenologie und der Hermeneutik finden, zu rekonstruieren und zu fragen, wie genau sie das perspektivische Selbstbewusstsein auf den Begriff bringen und was in diesem Zusammenhang Endlichkeit bedeutet. Es wird, abschließend, der für diese Denktradition relevante Endlichkeitsbegriff umgrenzt. Endlichkeit ist hier nicht als eine Art Ausgangspunkt zu denken, sondern als Ergebnis, das erarbeitet, wie auch verloren wird.

Human existence can be called finite in various respects. This essay is concerned with finitude in the sense of the necessarily limited character of our knowledge. This meaning of finitude is sometimes expressed by the notion of perspectivity: our knowledge is bound to our standpoint, whether literally to our position in space, or to our linguistic-cultural identity. The author makes an attempt to reconstruct the relevant philosophical analyses, as we find them especially in phenomenology and hermeneutics, and to ask how exactly they conceptualize perspectival self-consciousness and what finitude means in this context. In conclusion, the concept of finitude relevant to this tradition of thought is delineated. Finitude here is not to be thought of as a kind of starting point, but as a result that is worked out, as well as lost.
