Der das Themenheft zu "Kafkas Provinzen" einleitende Essay untersucht und analysiert das Phänomen der Provinz, ihre Formen und Funktionen, in Franz Kafkas Leben und Schriften - die sich als ein wiederkehrender und wohl auch konstitutiver Vorstellungs- und Erfahrungsraum in seinen Werken erweist. Zu diesem Zweck geht der Aufsatz in mehreren Schritten vor: (a) er rekonstruiert den kulturellen Hintergrund von Bildern und Erzählungen der Provinz zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts (die eng mit der Frage nach der Moderne verbunden sind); (b) er untersucht u.a. Briefe und Tagebucheinträge, um das "Provinzleben" des Autors zu erhellen(das zwischen der Aufführung romantischer Imaginationen und der Erfahrung ambivalenter technologischer Fortschritte oszilliert); (c) sie analysiert die Erscheinungsformen der Provinz in seinen literarischen Werken (in denen das Auftreten und die Verflechtung metafiktionaler, allegorischer und realistischer Provinzen zu beobachten ist); (d) sie erörtert die Frage, ob Kafkas Schriften als "rurbane" Werke verstanden werden können, d. h. als Werke, in denen sich städtische und ländliche Themen, Motive und Strukturen miteinander verwoben sind (und die auch Ausdruck des Lebens und der Lebenspraxis des Autors zwischen Stadt und Land sein könnten).

This introductory essay explores and analyzes the phenomenon of the province, its forms and functions, in Franz Kafka's life and writings - which proves to be a recurring and probably also constitutive space of imagination and experience in his works. To this end, the essay proceeds in several steps: (a) it reconstructs the cultural background of images and narratives of province at the beginning of the 20th century (which are deeply connected to the question of modernity); (b) it examines, among other things, letters and diary entries to shed light on the author's 'provincial life'(which oscillates between the performance of romantic imaginations and the experience of ambivalent technological progresses); (c) it analyzes the manifestations of the province in his literary works (in which the appearance and interconnection of metafictional, allegorical and realistic provinces can be observed); (d) it discusses the question of whether Kafka's writings can be understood as 'rurban' works, i. e. as works that interweave urban and rural themes, motifs and structures (and which might also be an expression of the author's life and practices between the city andthe countryside).
