This piece comprises an in-depth, critical review of the book by Myisha Cherry, Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better, Princeton, NJ, Princeton University Press 2023. I praise the book for its subtle and pluralist account of forgiveness, and for its use of detailed examples from literature as well as from her own life. We agree that forgiveness is not an unambiguous good. However, I worry that Cherry goes a bit too far into the semantic spaces of other concepts, to the point where she risks losing some important distinctions, such as the distinctions between excusing and forgiving, between unilateral 'letting go' and forgiving, between acquiescence and forgiveness. I show this by a close discussion of several of her examples.
