Mathey and Santini: the roots and context of Santini's early work

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The early works of Jan Blažej Santini - Aichel, i.e. the Zbraslav Monastery (from 1700) and the Chapel of St. Anne in Panenské Břežany (1705-08), are characterised by architectural complexity and a variety of themes and motifs that stand out significantly from contemporary architecture in Bohemia. To understand them, it is necessary to analyse the roots of his work. The first starting point is the gothic architecture with which he was naturally confronted during his formative years in Mala Strana and Hradčany, and which became the basis for his baroque-gothic experiments. The second important starting point is the personality of his presumed teacher Jean-Baptiste Mathey, who may have provided Santini with an overview of contemporary European architecture. The architectural treatises, with which Mathey himself had evidently worked, could have been an ideal medium for him to do so. Thanks to the Italian models, Santini could have gained knowledge that could theoretically replace his undocumented study trip to Rome. However, not only the treatises of Guarino Guarini or Andrea Pozzo, which give insight into the Italian architectural world, but also the works of Jean Marot (Recueil des plans..., so-called Petit Marot, 1654, and L'Architecture française, so-called Grand Marot, 1670), which convey an awareness of 17th-century French architecture, are crucial in terms of his subsequent work. It is in Marot's treatises that we find possible models for the plastic composition of Santini's buildings and the minimalist architectural expression that would become one of the hallmarks of his architecture. Santini's early buildings are thus not only a remarkable testimony to the formation of his unique architecture, but also a remarkable example of the synthesis between Roman and French architecture of the 17th century.
