Der Denkweg von Wilhelm Schapp kann im Wesentlichen durch drei Phasen charakterisiert werden. Die erste Phase, die als "streng phänomenologisch" bezeichnet werden kann, lässt sich vollständig auf seine Promotion bei Edmund Husserl und auf die Analysen innerhalb seiner Dissertationsschrift von 1910 - getitelt Beiträge zur Phänomenologie der Wahrnehmung - zurückführen. Hierin greift Schapp einige Aspekte der Husserl'schen Phänomenologie auf, erschließt aber neue thematische Horizonte, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die "Wahrnehmung des Dinges" und sein "kognitives Verständnis".

Wilhelm Schapp's way of thinking can essentially be characterized by three phases. The first phase, which can be described as "strictly phenomenological", can be traced back entirely to his doctorate under Edmund Husserl and the analyses in his dissertation from 1910, entitled Contributions to the Phenomenology of Perception. In it, Schapp takes up some aspects of Husserl's phenomenology, but opens up new thematic horizons, particularly with regard to the "perception of the thing" and his "cognitive understanding".
