The Velvet Revolution in 1989 Czechoslovakia marked a profound shift in the historical narratives present in this former socialist federation. In this chapter we focus on historical narratives in the realm of popular music. As state socialism collapsed, music scenes that were once marginalized flourished, reshaping cultural boundaries and contributing to a new historical discourse. This period, analysed through Walter Benjamin's concept of 'messianic time', highlights the role of music in reflecting and influencing the transitional culture. The evolving reception and reinterpretation of protest music during and after the revolution underscore its significance in constructing national identity and navigating postsocialist transformations.
