Information Source and Epistemic Modality in the Classical Usage of ἀνάγκη and ἀναγκαῖον
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper discusses the role of information source in the epistemic use of ἀνάγκη and ἀναγκαῖον in Classical Greek prose. I argue that the predominantly objective value of epistemic modals in Greek is compatible with salient evidential implicatures. Based on the theory of grammaticalization developed in Functional Discourse Grammar and the classification of different types of inferential reasoning according to the degree of subjectivity, I propose a grammaticalization path for epistemic modals that originate from deontic markers. I claim that abductive reasoning is the most subjective type of inference, which predicts that the abductive usage of ἀνάγκη developed from the more original deductive and inductive value of the modal. The hypothesis is tested by analyzing the usage of ἀνάγκη and ἀνα- γκαῖον + AcI in the corpus of the ten Attic orators. In order to trace the evolution of the construction before and after the 4th cent. BCE, data from older prose and some post-classical authors is included as well.
