Old Kingdom Wooden Coffins : A Neglected Topic

The wooden coffin was an important part of the burial equipment in ancient Egypt. It protected the body on both practical and symbolic levels, securing thus the eternal life of the deceased. Wooden burial containers were used in all periods of ancient Egyptian history, but they are not preserved and published in the same detail, and the Old Kingdom coffins, for instance, are neglected in Egyptological research. In that period, the vast majority of the wooden coffins were of rectangular shape and undecorated. As such, these &quot;chests of life&quot; stand on the edge of both Old Kingdom and coffin studies, which is something that has already been pointed out by some scholars. Albeit seemingly insignificant in terms of decoration and inscriptions, the corpus of the Old Kingdom coffins is relatively extensive and needs to be properly scrutinised and analysed since it can bring us an amount of information not only about the woodcraft, workshops and technical aspects, but also about social and spatial distribution; a reliable typology is missing as well. This article discusses the previous research, presents the challenges in studying the wooden coffins, and investigates the royal coffins of the period under survey.
