Eines der unverkennbaren Merkmale der Gesellschaften der Ostblockstaaten insbesondere seit Anfang der 1970er Jahre war die wachsende Mobilität ihrer Bevölkerung. Besuchten 1960 kaum drei Millionen Bürger von Ostblockstaaten einen der übrigen sozialistischen Staaten, waren es im jahre 1988 ganze 90 Millionen. Für die Bürger der sozialistischen Staaten eröffneten sich damit neue Freiräume für die Befriedigung ihrer materiellen wie immateriellen Interessen, die der sozialistische Staat nur eingeschränkt imstande war, effektiv zu kontrollieren. Warum aber unterstützten die meisten sozialistischen Länder die Entwicklung des gegenseitigen Fremdenverkehrs? Um die Antwort auf diese Frage zu finden, untersucht die Studie die Rolle des Auslandstourismus in den Augen des herrschenden Regimes sowie die Strategien, mit denen sie den wirtschaftlichen wie ideologischen Problemen entgegenwirkten, die der Auslandstourismus mit sich brachte.

The increasing socialist states population mobility in East Europe was a significant feature of their societies especially from the early 1970's. Only 3 million Eastern block citizens had visited other socialist state in 1960, in 1988 90 million. New spaces for satisfaction of their both material and immaterial needs opened up for the socialist states citizens that the respective state was incapable to keep effectively under control. But why the majority of the socialist states supported the mutual tourism? In order to reply this question, the study examines the role of travelling abroad in the view of the ruling regime, and also the ways the ruling regime faced the economic and ideological problems the tourism caused.
