Estimation of Subjective (Income) Poverty Lines: Sensitivity-Specificity Curves Approach
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Poverty research can be set in subjective or objective terms. According to the subjective approach poverty lines are inherently subjective judgments people make about what is a socially accepted minimum standard of living in a particular society. There exists no single generally acceptable method for estimating subjective poverty lines and the overall level of subjective poverty in society. The paper proposes a methodology for subjective poverty lines estimation, which is based on so called "discrete information". The respondents are not asked directly about the value of their subjective poverty line, but are asked how they perceive their own economic situation and whether they feel poor or not in relation to their incomes. This might lower down theirfeeling of discomfort. The proposed approaches are based on sensitivity and specificity curves. The estimations are illustrated on Slovak EU SILC 2006 - 2008 microdata.
