Das Jahr 2017 war für die Beziehungen zwischen der Europäischen Union und Georgien ein bemerkenswertes Jahr. Dies galt vor allem für die Bürger Georgiens. Nach Inkrafttreten des Assoziierungsabkommens zwischen den beiden Parteien am 1. Juli 2016 dürfen die Georgier seit dem 28. März 2017 ohne Visum in den Schengen-Raum einreisen. Die Bürger der EU-Mitgliedstaaten reisen bereits seit 2004 dank der freiwilligen Initiative der georgischen Regierung nach der sogenannten "Rosenrevohiüon" im November 2003 visumfrei nach Georgien. Die EU sieht die Visaliberalisierung für georgische Staatsangehörige als einen Fortschritt innerhalb ihrer Agenda der östlichen Partnerschaft (EaP) von 2009, die zum Ziel hat, die politischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaflichen Beziehungen der Union zu sechs Ländern an ihrer Ostgrenze zu vertiefen und zu festigen: Armenien, Aserbaidschan. Weißrussland, Georgien, Moldawien und die Ukraine. Georgien als Staat und Nation betrachtet dies Jedoch als Schritt auf dem Weg zu größeren Ziel: nämlich die Erfüllung der historischen Sehnsucht, ein Teil Europas zu sein.

2017 was a remarkable year for relations between the European Union and Georgia. This was especially true for the citizens of Georgia. Following the entry into force of the Association Agreement between the two parties on 1 July 2016, Georgians have been allowed to enter the Schengen area without a visa since 28 March 2017. Citizens of the EU Member States have been traveling to Georgia in November 2004, visa-free, thanks to the Georgian government's voluntary initiative for the so-called "Rose Revue". The EU sees visa liberalization for Georgian nationals as a step in its 2009 Eastern Partnership (EaP) agenda, which aims to deepen and consolidate the Union's political, economic and social ties with six countries on its eastern border: Armenia , Azerbaijan. Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. However, Georgia as a state and nation sees this as a step towards a greater goal: to fulfill the historical longing to be part of Europe.
