Bureaucratic Autonomy vs. Political Leadership: Relationship within Local Government
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Czech Republic experienced numerous local coalition breakdowns during the local election period 2014-2018. Primary explanation to these breakdowns lies in the weakening of established parties, which appeared unready to fight the appeal of new radical and populist political groups. Throughout these breakdowns local administration was left without political supervision, which had varying degrees of impact on daily life and progress of municipalities. Comparing the number of documented coalition collapses and their administrative impact, urban governments of statutory cities are the ideal sample for thorough analysis. The purpose of this contribution is to present a comparative analysis of statutory cities, which experienced a coalition breakdown, and their administrations, which suffered its consequences. The stability of past governing democratic coalitions and their administrations is irrelevant when chaos is introduced by a coalition breakdown.
