Religion and social progressivism in Poland and Slovakia: toward (de)securitization?

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The chapter examines the securitization of social progressivism in Slovakia and Poland in a comparative perspective. The securitization practices in the two cases are directed at multiculturalism and liberal approaches to the issues of sexuality and gender. In Slovakia and Poland, the securitization of multiculturalism is often based on the idea of "them" - which refers predominantly to Muslim migrants - being a threat to "us," the Christians. This means that, in both countries, the framing of migrants is tied to identitarian concepts of a Christian civilization rather than to religion per se. Consequently, political elites play a much more active securitizing role as compared to religious institutions. Additionally, an analysis of the discourse of Catholic institutions (charities, in particular) shows a much more open-minded stance toward the migrants. Arguably, this attitude is based on those Christian values and biblical teachings, which urge people to show kindness to strangers. In contrast, with respect to the issues of gender and sexuality, illiberal political elites and Catholic institutions in both countries are in mutual agreement, presenting LGBTIQ+ community as a threat to the "traditional" family and Christian values.
