The chapter addresses the relationship between political parties and agenda setting by offering a more complex perspective on political parties. Political parties should be considered not only as unitary collective actors but also as organizations embedded in the political institutions of a given polity. Thus, a political party represents a policy actor in the policy process as well as an arena that links party-related and encompasses party-related elements of political life (political ideology, election programs, and so on).First, we sum up the major developments in this field. Then, we identify the main approaches addressing political parties as unitary collective actors (the normative liberal model, socio-economic and ideational models, and multivariate models including the Punctuated Equilibrium Theory and the Multiple Streams Framework), address the party polarization issue, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this dominant perception.Consequently, we suggest broadening the perspective to consider political parties as organizations. We propose to examine intra-party dynamics, ideological filters, and party dominant goals using the three party "faces" concept (party on the ground, party central office, and party in public office) from Katz and Mair's "cartel party" theory and dominant party goals (vote-, office-, policy-, democracy-seeking) from Harmel and Janda's integrated theory of party goals and party change. Finally, we outline a research agenda emphasizing the institutional, ideological, and actor-related dimensions of parties in agenda setting. By emphasizing this neglected perspective, we aim to enhance our understanding of the role and influence of political parties on agenda setting.
