Vietnamese Business Enclaves on the Czech-German and Czech-Austrian Borders

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This chapter examines the development of Vietnamese entrepreneurship in rural and peripheral areas of the Czech-Austrian and Czech-German border regions, where thousands of Vietnamese migrants have settled. Based on longitudinal research conducted in the Czech border regions from 2017 to 2024, the chapter explores the factors influencing the growth of Vietnamese businesses and the subsequent formation and internal dynamics of ethnic business enclaves. It investigates, in particular, the impact of historical context, peripherality, and economic asymmetry-characterized by lower costs on the Czech side and higher purchasing power on the German-speaking side. The chapter argues that the peripheral nature of the borders and economic asymmetry were key catalysts for the development of Vietnamese businesses. This peripherality provided Vietnamese entrepreneurs with a niche in the globalized market, free from significant competition from supermarkets and shopping malls. The border regions, largely overlooked by investors and international retail corporations until the mid-2000s, allowed Vietnamese businesses to thrive and remain competitive. Additionally, the focus on German-speaking customers enabled higher profits compared to operating in the Czech interior. Lastly, the peripheral nature of the borders led to an outflow of locals and thus to the increased availability of real estate, which Vietnamese entrepreneurs could acquire at advantageous prices, further investing in their business development.
