In den Texten Friedrich Nietzsches macht, folgt man Ecce homo, jener Konflikt des Lebens mit dem Antlitz der Vergangenheit, dem es "bis zur Erlösung auch alles Vergangenen" (EH, KSA 6, 348) gehe, die eigentliche ,Aufgabe' Zarathustras und auch Nietzsches selber aus (ebd.). Nietzsche hat sogar ein Signalwort für diesen Konflikt geprägt: das 'Es war'. Im Folgenden soll anhand einer Analyse derjenigen Stellen, in denen er sich dieses idiosynkratrischen Ausdrucks bedient, eine Beschreibung dieses Konflikts zwischen Zeit und Leben vorgenommen werden. So kann festgestellt werden, dass es sich bei dem 'Es war' um einen Problemkomplex handelt, der Nietzsche in allen Phasen seiner vergleichsweise kurzen philosophischen Schaffensperiode und damit sein ganzes schriftstellerisches Leben lang immer wieder an zentralen Stellen beschäftigt hat. Abschließend wird die Verformung des 'Es war' bei Heidegger kritisch geprüft.

In the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, the conflict between the life and the face of the past is called the true task of Zarathustra and Nietzsche himself (se Ecco homo, KSA 6, 348). Nietzsche created a signal word for this conflict: 'it was'. This paper analyzes the parts in Nietzsche's works where he used this idiosyncratic expression of the 'it was' as a sign for the conflict bewtween time and liffe. It can be said that the 'it was' was a central problem for the philosophy of Nietzsche that appeared troughout of his comparable short creative period. Finally, the echo of Nietzsche's 'it was' in Heidegger's works will be critically discussed based on the prior analysis.
