Die Einführung des Buches erläutert die Grundgedanken des Sammelbandes und stellt die einzelnen Aufsätze vor. Grundgedanken sind die gleichzeitige Nähe und Ferne zwischen Sartre und Levinas. Diese werden anhand von ihrer tatsächlichen Beziehung und ihren Begegnungen, ihren Bezugnahmen und Reaktionen aufeinander und eines Vergleichs ihrer philosophischen Überlegungen aufgewiesen. Hierauf gründet die Idee eines Dialogs, der noch über beide Denker hinausgeht.

The introduction of the book explains the basic ideas of the anthology and introduces the individual contributions. The basic ideas are the simultaneous proximity and distance between Sartre and Levinas. These are demonstrated on the basis of their actual relationship and encounters, their references and reactions to each other, and a comparison of their philosophical reflections. This is the basis for the idea of a dialogue that goes beyond both thinkers.
