Traces and Clues in a Fairytale: Research Based on a “Weird” Historical Source

This essay focuses on one specific moment of the author&apos;s research, which was centered upon the last seven years of the life of Hugo Vavrečka (1880-1952). Before and during World War II, Vavrečka belonged to the Czechoslovak elite circles, whose paths also crossed the line of the Havel family when his daughter married Václav M. Havel. He had two grandsons, one of whom was Václav Havel, the first Czechoslovak president after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. In the post-war world, though, Vavrečka lost his elite status, as he was accused of collaboration with the Nazis, for which he was later wrongfully sentenced to prison and confiscation of all property. Several sources are available for this period, but only a few of them capture the perspective of the historical actor - except a fairytale he wrote in March 1945 for his grandson. The author, therefore, explores the possibilities of using this &apos;weird&apos; historical source and illustrates applying Carlo Ginzburg&apos;s method of traces and clues to it.
