Ságu o jómských vikinzích badatelé poměrně jednohlasně považují za jednu z nejdříve zapsaných ság a její zápis datují do doby kolem roku 1200.

    Saga of the Jómsvikings

  • Popis výsledku anglicky

The core of the book is a commented Czech translation of the AM 291 version of The Saga of the Jómsvikings (Jómsvíkinga saga). This genre-defying early saga, which combines the story of the Danish Vikings among the Slavs at the mouth of the Oder with the story of the Danish campaigns against the Norwegian Jarl Hákon the Mighty, has been unjustly overshadowed by the classical sagas and was unknown to Czech readers. In addition to the translation, the book contains an introduction and a concluding study. Aimed at the general reader, the introduction presents the historical context of the period and shows how the centralisation of Norway and Denmark took place at the end of the 10th century, with the Ottonian Empire attacking Denmark and the interests of Denmark, Poland and Saxony clashing in the Baltic region. It also mentions the influence of the time around year 1200 on Iceland when the saga was written down, and presents all the surviving manuscripts of the saga and other written sources that touch on its theme: Skaldic poetry from the 10th to the 12th century, various Latin chronicles, Old Norse historiographies and narrative works. The extensive concluding study uses the material of one of the earliest written sagas to present a variety of approaches that contemporary medieval studies can use to analyse Old Norse literature. The historical approach, in the tradition of memory studies, uses extant sources to learn about historical power fields that influenced the shaping of the narrative of events. In doing so, the saga must be read in the context of political and social developments at the time of the oral sources, at the time of their writing down and in the time in between. As to the further approaches used in the study, onomastics makes it possible to link Jómsborg with nowadays Wolin; archaeology describes artefacts that indicate strong Danish domination, which led to associating all Slavs in Old Norse texts with Jómsborg and calling them Vinðar; and cultural anthropology uses the text to clarify the role of social ties in the society of the time.Various forms of literary analysis occupy the largest space in the study, since the perception of narrative strategies is a necessary condition for using literary works as a basis for historical and cultural conclusions. A narrator with some degree of self-reflexivity of the narrative process shows that The Saga of the Jómsvikings is part of a long narrative tradition and cannot therefore be regarded as narratologically primitive. Its transitional status - and, given its early date of written composition, its undifferentiated style - can be described on a narratological level as a mixed modality, and its heterogeneity is revealed by detailed analyses of the function of verse, physical descriptions of characters, and depictions of emotions. A pragmatic linguistic analysis, on the other hand, shows that the verbal conflicts in the saga involve many indirect utterances that may be related to its proximity to oral culture, which presupposes a more shared cultural and situational context between speaker and listener than literary culture. The results of the various disciplines, which are methodologically completely different, often complement each other and create a meaningful network of connections. The material of this saga, which apparently had a fluctuating status even within the axis between historiography and fiction, gives us an insight into the process of the creation of the Old Norse sagas, both in terms of the development of the sagas' genres and in terms of the creation of a particular saga.
