Kniha se zabývá fenoménem misgenderingu, tedy nevhodného určenígenderu osoby v komunikačních situacích, a propojuje perspektivy genderových studií, feministické filozofie a filozofie jazyka. Autorka ukazuje, že misgendering nemusí být vždy záměrně hostilní, a představuje typologii různých forem misgenderingu, včetně neintencionálních chyb v referenci způsobených například zmatením. K tomu využívá koncept mentálních složek Françoise Recanatiho, který se zaměřuje na způsoby reference mluvčích. Při zkoumání genderu v rámci komunikativního chování vychází primárně z teorie performativity genderu Judith Butler a z prací teoretiček a teoretiků zabývajících se přímo oblastí trans* studií, jako je Jack Halberstam, Talia Mae Bettcher či Robin Dembroff. Autorka kriticky reflektuje jazykovou praxi, ve které je gender za účelem reference přiřazován na základě sociálně konvencionalizovaných znaků, jako je vzhled, gestikulace, hlas či oblečení. Tyto znaky, ačkoliv se mohou zdát samozřejmé, mohou být interpretovány jako matoucí, nezřejmé či &quot;nesprávné&quot;, a právě v těchto momentech dochází k misgenderingu. Pomocí analýzy modelových situací autorka odhaluje limity Recanatiho pojetí mentálních složek, obzvláště s ohledem na nahlížení aspektu genderu v rámci reference jako zřejmého a neproblematického. Kniha tudíž přispívá jak k genderovým studiím, tak k filozofii jazyka.

The monograph deals with the phenomenon of misgendering, i.e., the inappropriate determination of a person&apos;s gender in communicative situations, and connects the perspectives of gender studies, feminist philosophy, and the philosophy of language. The author shows that misgendering is not always intentionally hostile and presents a typology of different forms of misgendering, including unintentional errors in reference caused, for example, by confusion. To this end, she uses François Recanati&apos;s concept of mental files, which focuses on the ways in which speakers refer to things. In examining gender within communicative behaviour, she draws primarily on Judith Butler&apos;s theory of gender performativity and the work of theorists directly involved in the field of trans* studies, such as Jack Halberstam, Talia Mae Bettcher, and Robin Dembroff. The author critically reflects on linguistic practice in which gender is assigned for the purpose of reference on the basis of socially conventionalized signs such as appearance, gestures, voice, or clothing. These signs, although they may seem obvious, can be interpreted as confusing, unclear, or &quot;incorrect,&quot; and it is precisely in these moments that misgendering occurs. Through the analysis of model situations, the author reveals the limits of Recanati&apos;s conception of mental files, especially with regard to viewing the aspect of gender within reference as obvious and unproblematic. The book thus contributes to both gender studies and the philosophy of language.
