Per Ambrogio di Milano, il volto diventa quasi sinonimo di Dio e dell'uomo e della loro attivita. Da un lato, descrive la loro conoscibilita, dall'altro, la loro irradiazione o azione verso l'esterno, cioè come gli altri lo vedono. Soprattutto nel contesto dei Salmi, il riferimento al volto di Dio o dell'uomo esprime la relazione tra Dio e l'uomo, o l'uomo in relazione a Dio. Il volto diventa così per Ambrogio una componente nodale della sua antropologia dell'uomo creata a immagine e somiglianza di Dio. Dal momento che ((lo splendore del volto del Padre è Cristo}} (Ambr. expl. ps. 43, 12), i termini del volto diventano portatori anche della dottrina cristologica e del carattere cristologico della creazione dell'uomo. Il contributo analizza e presenta diverse impostazioni del volto, che da un lato ne rivelano il portatore, dall'altro diventano un mezzo affinché il soggetto possa conoscerlo.

For Ambrose of Milan, the face becomes almost synonymous with God and man and their activity. On the one hand, it describes their knowability, on the other, their outward radiation or action, i.e. how others see him. Especially in the context of the Psalms, the reference to the face of God or man expresses the relationship between God and man, or man in relation to God. The face thus becomes for Ambrose a nodal component of his anthropology of man created in the image and likeness of God. Since 'the splendour of the Father's face is Christ' (Ambr. expl. ps. 43, 12), the terms of the face also become bearers of the Christological doctrine and the Christological character of man's creation. The contribution analyses and presents different approaches of the face, which on the one hand reveal its bearer, and on the other become a means for the subject to know it.
